It’s official. Last night Fox announced that The X-Files will be coming back with a second season of its revival series.

It’s been just over a year since Mulder and Scully returned to their rightful place, side by side on television screens, fifteen years after the show’s ninth  season had come to a close. The pair of FBI alien hunters only reuniting for a second feature film outing in 2008.

The revival series gave fans six brand new episodes. Split equally, three episodes featured standalone “monster of the week” storylines. The other three dealt with a central arc, often called “mythology episodes”.

The second season, or eleventh, depending on how you’re counting, will give fans even more instalments of things that go bump in the night, with ten episodes planned. Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are set to return as the iconic characters they first brought to life almost twenty-four years ago. Executive producer and series creator Chris Carter is also returning.

Speaking to Deadline, Fox Entertainment president David Madden said:

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide,” said Fox president David Madden.

“Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”

According to Deadline the new season will start production in the summer and is planned for release on Fox as early as later this year.

It’s not just fans who are excited. Anderson and Duchovny have been expressing their excitement on twitter.
